Joshua Dysart Signing in New York!

This Wed., as Conan and the Midnight God #2 hits the stands all hot out of the oven, I'll be doing a little jig down at Jim Hanley's Universe in Manhattan. Come and see me eat a live toad.

Joshua Dysart Does Hellboy and BPRD!

hellboy.jpg

From the article on Comic Book Resources entitled NYCC, DAY 2: SCOTT ALLIE REVEALS THREE NEW HELLBOY PROJECTS FOR 2007

"Comic Book Resources: And then there's "BPRD 1946" which I'm going to take a guess is set just when Hellboy was still a wee-un? What can you tell us about that?

Scott Allie: Yeah, so Mignola and Josh Dysart are writing this and Paul Azaceta is drawing it. Paul was our choice for Lobster Johnson at one point, but I felt he was a better choice here, and Armstrong better on The Lobster. Hellboy's barely in this - he's effectively not in it. He's basically an infant at this point, and Broom is sent back to Europe to look into the remains of the Nazi Occult Bureau's experiments, see what they were up to.

In Berlin in 1946, you had the beginnings of the Cold War - two years ago we were allies with the Russians, and now we were uncomfortably occupying - in the military sense of the word - the same space. And the Russians, of course, had their own occult specialists on the scene."

Also I'm writing a Hellboy one-shot with Mike Mignola called "HELLBOY: THEY THAT GO DOWN IN SHIPS" to be illustrated by Jason Alexander. It will only be available with the upcoming Hellboy Video Game.

Life is good.

New York Schedule

I'll be in NYC for ComiCon here's my schedule...

Feb 22, Fri. 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm, VERTIGO: LOOKING AHEAD panel. I'll just be in the audience this time, chilling and watching one of my most precious Alma maters do its little dance. But if you want to come hang with me and heckle little Dougie "I know the future" Rushkoff (no, really, he does) and Brian V., you're more than welcome.

Feb 23, Sat. 11:30 am - 1:00 pm, PENNY FARTHING PRESS BOOTH #659. I'll be signing the "Captain Gravity and the Power of the Vril" trade as well as anything else you want marked up. I'll be joined by Stephen Vrattos, creator of the original "Captain Gravity" and Bob Almond, inker for "Captain Gravity and the Power of the Vril" and "The Victorian". The last 30 min. I'll sit in with my good friend Stuart Moore, creator and writer of "PARA" and hatch a plan for world domination.

Feb 23 Sat. 1 pm: I desperately want to see Ragni perform, but I'm not sure where this is taking place on the floor of the con and I'll have to rush there straight from my signing. If you think this seems cool, meet me there! If you can find it.

Feb 23, Sat. 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm, DARK HORSE COMICS BOOTH #839. I'll be signing "Conan and the Midnight God" issues plus whatever else you've got in your grubby little paw. Cary Nord, regular penciler on the ongoing Conan title, will also be there. I expect most of you will be coming to see him (that's okay, I'm used to it).

Feb 28, Wed. There's talk of a signing at JIM HANLEY'S UNIVERSE in Manhattan for the release of CONAN AND THE MIDNIGHT GOD #2, but the details have yet to be worked out. So this is not entirely a go as of this writing. I'll keep you informed.

What little time is left will be spent with friends and business associates! I'm jazzed to get back to the Big Apple!

See you there!

Forro in the Dark

Great new album!! I can't stop listening to it!

Check it out here!

From the review at EARPLUG:

"Forro is a jumpy, accordion-driven, polka-like style that emerged in the hills of northeastern Brazil, so there's something appealingly incongruous about revamping the genre into a soundtrack for urban scenesters. The New York six-piece Forro in the Dark, led by singer/percussionist Mauro Refosco, leave the accordion out and opens the sound up a bit (it's usually played by trios, not sextets). They write good songs, too, which helps. "Que Que Tu Fez" sounds like a wedding dance in progress; opener "Indios dos Norte" jumps up to get down like prime Balkan gypsy music. Guest vocal spots by David Byrne, Bebel Gilberto, and Miho Hatori make sense on an album with such world appeal, but they're mere icing on the party cake."

Here's a sketch Adrian Tomine (artist of the wonderful "Optic Nerve") did of the band for The New Yorker:

Conan And The Midnight God #2 Feb 28!

Okay, so I'm a week early, but I'll be in New York and it won't be so easy to post this, so I'm getting to it now. Enjoy!

The ad copy reads...

"As his queen mourns the death of their son, Conan mounts an all-out invasion of Stygia, setting events in motion that may change the course of all Hyboria!

Which is mostly what it's about.. I mean, you know, sorta.

Fun Links!

Click here for a preview of the first four pages.

Click here for the making of issue #1. Includes script pages and pencils!

Click here for a great interview on my Conan at The Pulse.

IGN covers Conan here.

And then there's the reviews...

"To my surprise, I found what might be the beginnings of the best Conan story I've ever read. " - Eye on Comics.

"A good start to a story that promises to take its readers beyond Howard's tales of Conan. It stays true to the original material while adding its own flavor." - Papper Back Reader

"It's difficult to tell where Will Conrad's pencils end, and where Juan Ferreyra's colors begin. I don't know if Ferreyra is coloring on a computer, or using traditional paints, but it looks magnificent." - Silver Bullet Comics

You like me... you really like me!

Thanks for reading!

Only Mildly Irritating!

Holy shit! We made one of my favorite weeklies, The Onion!!

Tolerability-Index_7.jpg

And we're only "Mildly Irritating"! Hell, we made it across the halfway point, we're rolling on into "tolerable" country, baby!! Once our children are assimilated and speak the language they will be fully recognized as "Tolerable" citizens, meanwhile MTV's Engaged & Underage won't see legitimacy for generations to come.

In being rated as "Mildly Irritating" we join the likes of "Blades of Glory" and "Edy's American Idol Themed Ice Cream"! YES!!

When I took this gig I really didn't understood just how big Avril was. I mean, I had heard her name and all, but I don't watch MTV, I don't see mainstream films, I don't even listen to radio stations that play commercials. I'm totally out of the cultural loop, so I simply never imagined all this attention being aimed at our little story. But last time I googled "Avril" and "Manga", one million seven hundred thousand hits came up. Jesus Christ!!

For the last three weeks I've been getting emails from my readers asking me to explain myself. You see, they expect a certain kind of product from me, and this ain't it. And you know what? I love it. I love that I'm throwing my readers for a loop. I love that the media is shit storming us. I love that me, a guy with no cell phone and no car, a guy who sleeps on his floor in an apartment by the beach and has an excessive masturbation problem, has infiltrated, even on this humble level, the upper echelons of the pop-kingdom by simply writing the best story he could under the great and glamorous benefactor that is Avril Lavigne.

It's been a funny year, kids. A funny year.

See my original thoughts on the Avril project here.

Thank God for lEDs

The completely insane zealots of The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) of Topeka, Kansas will be protesting the funeral of Marine Cpl. Jennifer M. Parcell - at 9:15 a.m., Fri., Feb. 16 - at Oak Grove Bapt. Church, 2106 Churchville Rd., Bel Air, Maryland, just as they have at so many other troop funerals. They intend on exposing the grieving family to hate mongering like this...

20070211_pa3.jpg

Click here for a PDF of their flyer, promoting the event. I've chosen some choice bits from it and printed them below. See if you can follow their logic...

God Himself Has Now Become America's Terrorist, Killing and Maiming American Troops in Strange Lands for Fag Sins.

and...

America bombed our church with an IED made by fag students at Washburn Univ. in Topeka. In His
retaliatory wrath, God is killing Americans with Muslim IEDs: "Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and
do my prophets no harm." 1 Chron. 16:22. "For it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the
Lord." Rom. 12:19. God Almighty killed Army Cpl. Jennifer Parcell. She died in shame, not honor - for a fag nation cursed by God: "Buried with the burial of an ass." Jer. 22:19. Then to Hell with her soldier pals.

The thing is, in all the photos of their protests I've never see more than 2 people in an image at a time. Not much of a rally. So they're certainly fringe in appeal and ultimately irrelevant. But the sorrow they bring to these grieving families shows a pathological lack of compassion (never mind their profound disconnect from reality).

Ultimately the real problem with the world today is extremists, be they Muslim, Christian, Leftist, Conservative or other. Extremism is a cancer that blinds reason. And it only takes a few extremists to ignite a situation. The willingness towards hate and violence is a valuable tool for a fringe minority who can never gain legitimacy for their outmoded and threatened memes. And the true danger of their work is that we, on the other side of their wrath, begin to hate them in return (Westboro Baptist Church was, themselves, bombed on August 20, 1995. They now attribute that incident with "bringing down the unmitigated and irreversible wrath of God upon this evil nation, manifesting itself in the daily bloody IED-deaths of American soldiers in Iraq and other places"). Extremism's greatest asset is its capacity to turn us all into extremists ourselves.

PS: From the research I've done it seems like they're a small group of imbalanced individuals with an unhealthy fixation on homosexuality (suggesting possible latent tendencies in their leadership) who fashion themselves to be at the center of God's eye. They, as a collective, must've been deeply emotionally traumatized when an explosion, aimed at them, hit near their home. Six years later, following the true path of the delusional, they latched on to the 9-11 incident and convinced themselves that God was finally punishing all of America for not hearing their message and for raising a hand against them. The level of self-righteousness and self-absorption is staggering. They actually believe that all post 9-11 events stem from their primary message and how that message is being treated. How unimaginative, one dimensional and essentially abusive their God is. Only a coward would bow down before such a petty fucker.

COMIC-CON ROOMS GO ON SALE TOMORROW MORNING AT 9 A.M.

AT 9 a.m. tomorrow, you can either book rooms online at ComicCon.org, or by phone at 877-552-6642. Word is the rooms go fast.

Gentrification of the convention continues as the media giants who require larger and larger amounts of the finite space available push out small comic publishers.

So have a good time! I'll see you there.

Love God's Way!

Check out this hilarious list of "Gay Bands" and bands that push the "Gay Agenda" published by a Christian fear-mongering group. What's funny is that, miraculously, The Dresden Dolls (whose first album of brechtian pop-punk cabaret was, to my mind, one of the absolute best of that year) is considered "safe for your children", along with the Right Brothers and Cyndi Lauper.

Even more amusing is that if you scroll down you'll see that they call Oscar Wilde a "reformed homosexual". I got news for you, all my little frightened Christians, Oscar Wilde was never a "reformed" anything.

For the life of me, I don't understand why the Scissor Sisters made the list.

It's a sunny, sunny February day outside. Who cares from which way the favored weather blows?

Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul, leave me my name! - John Proctor, The Curcible, Act V, by Arthur Miller

WTTW Chicago - Max Headroom Pirating Incident - 11-22-87

"At 11:15pm, viewers of the PBS affiliate WTTW were absorbing an episode of the British sci-fi series Doctor Who when their TV pictures danced sporadically for a moment. With a randomly gyrating panel of corrugated metal used as a backdrop, the unnerving Max Headroom doppelganger launched into an eccentric diatribe in a highly distorted voice. With no engineers on location at the transmission tower, WTTW employees looked on helplessly as the intruder seized control of their broadcast to say the following:

"He's a freaky nerd!"

"This guy's better than Chuck Swirsky." (a WGN -TV sportscaster at the time)

"Oh Jesus!"

"Catch the wave." (a reference to the New Coke marketing slogan)

"Your love is fading."

(hums the theme song to the 1959 TV series "Clutch Cargo")

"I stole CBS."

(unintelligible)

"Oh, I just made a giant masterpiece printed all over the greatest world newspaper nerds."

"My brother is wearing the other one."

"It's dirty."

"They're coming to get me!"

"This symphony of strangeness reached its crescendo when the rubber-masked imposter dropped his trousers, exposed his backside, and weathered a spirited flyswatter spanking from a female assistant. Moments later the picture went dark, and the surreal signal terminated in a flash of static.

"The exhaustive investigations by the three-letter agencies turned up nothing substantial, and over time the FCC and FBI resigned their manhunts without any significant insight into who he was, how he did it, or why. To this day the unexplained transmission of 22 November 1987 remains an historic curiosity, since it represents the last such signal of its kind... no other instance of a complete hijacking of a commercial broadcast has occurred in the US in the twenty years since."
