Masterworks of Alejandro Jodorowsky to see the light of day.

Up until now Alejandro Jodorowsky’s masterpieces “El Topo” and “The Holy Mountain” (my personal fav. of the two) have been completely unavailable except in poor bootleg Japanese versions for decades.

Enter Anchor Bay. In their infinite wisdom, they have seen fit to release a special limited edition collector’s DVD box set of one of the great mystical artists. The Films of Alejandro Jodorowsky hits on 5/1/07 (SRP $49.98). The set will contain “El Topo”, “The Holy Mountain” and “Fando Y Lis” on DVD, fully restored and remastered from new HD transfers in anamorphic widescreen video, with Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 audio. The box set will also include 2 music CDs with the soundtracks for “El Topo” and “The Holy Mountain”, as well as a DVD of Jodorowsky’s never-before-released first film, “La Cravate”.

Murder scene from SANTA SANGRE

Since “Santa Sangre” has been widely available for some time and, only recently, “The Rainbow Thief” (staring Peter O’Toole, Omar Sharif & Christopher Lee) was made available – for the first time ever all of Jodorowsky’s work in cinema will be viewable.

The true great alchemists who have used film as their focus for transformative experiments are few and far between… I can think of only two off the top of my head who profoundly identify themselves with spiritual or magical movements (Kenneth Anger & David Lynch) but with THE HOLY MOUNTAIN Jodorowski joined that small club and, arguably, became its most powerful member.

For those who love comics as well, Jodorowsky has also made a profound mark on the European comics culture. You can get a bead on his sequential work here
